He Has Magnified His Word, Psalm 138:2

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Psa 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble

The theme of this psalm is the security of God’s people. It is stated to have been one of Luther’s favorite psalms, perhaps it inspired the hymn he penned “A mighty fortress is our God”. This is one of those comforting psalms in the days of overwhelming circumstances. Every believer is in or will face battles in his or her life, and will be deficient to overcome them. Our deficiencies give more room for God’s all-sufficiency.

This verse alone sums up the totality of God in our lives. For one, “He is our refuge”, with enemies and overwhelming situations ever present, it’s good to know we have refuge in God alone, a hiding place, a place of trust. Not only is He our refuge, He is also “our strengthfor He lives in us, 2Ch 16:9For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him…” We are going in His strength by His Spirit. He is also “present any time and all the time, He never leaves, He is always with us, “Lo I am with you always“. He is also “our helpin trouble, a very accessible Help one easy to be found. The verse has but one conclusion, God is our everything.
