He Has Magnified His Word, Psalm 138:2

Portrait Of A Virtuous Woman

Pro 31:10 Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.

I find it fascinating that almost an entire chapter is dedicated to paint a portrait of a virtuous godly woman. “Virtuous” means to have moral virtue (goodness) and righteousness. Here as we shall see, Solomon lays down several qualifications of a virtuous woman from a wife perspective. We can start from Pro 19:14 which makes it clear that “…a prudent wife is from the LORD.” This is not implying that God drops her from heaven but that she is a choice gift of God’s providence to a man. Perfect example can be seen in Gen 24. Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for Isaac which involved instructions, prayers, action, counsel etc, exercising God’s given abilities for discernment while trusting His leading (Pro 3:5-6).

A wife of good character has a way of partly neutralizing the bad side of her husband. We can think of Abigail. A wife of no character (Jezebel) destroys the image of what is good (household). I believe the home is either made or destroyed by women. Therefore this description of the virtuous woman is designed to show what wives the women should make and what wives the men should desire. A prudent woman’s worth is not found in her looks or money but in her character. To continue.
