Mat 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
In this season we journey back to the Old Testament and learn about Christ and HIStory from Matthew’s gospel account. Matthew is writing to his people the Jews. His gospel gives an account of the human generation of Christ. The Jews had great expectations of the coming Messiah as king. Mathew narrating the genealogy of Jesus as that of a king who came through flawed human race as a Man. Jesus is His earthly human name and Christ is His title the anointed One, He is the God/Man. Christ came as a priest, but more particularly He came as a king; that which He preached first was His kingdom.
He is called the Son of David as a member of the royal tribe of Judah, not of the priestly tribe of Levi. Jesus is also the Son of Abraham the promised seed. David and Abraham were the two greatest ancestors of Jesus, and are named because it had been predicted that He would be their descendant. The promise of the blessing was made to Abraham and his seed, of the dominion to David and his seed. From these 2 we fit in, from Abraham are all the families of the earth to be blessed, and from David are all the families of the earth are to be ruled.
