Sound Doctrine Matters

2Ti 1:13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

It was important for Timothy to have sound words/doctrine to sink his teeth in and not let go of. It was to be done in faith and love . It was only found in Christ Jesus. In short, Paul was reminding him that sound doctrine matters, especially when rightly understood and rightly applied. The apostle had written to him in his first letter 1Tim 3:14-16, that Jesus is the ground and the pillar for the truth. These 6 truths he was to guard and hold on to them: 1. God was manifested in the flesh, 2. Justified in the Spirit, 3. Seen by angels, 4. Preached among the Gentiles, 5. Believed on in the world, 6. Received up in glory. 1Tim 3:14-16.

The life and the hope for our calling rests on gospel truth. The means to overcome our fears, confusion, deception by enemy is by truth. Jesus tempted by Satan in the wilderness had but truth as the final authority to counter attack the lies of Satan. Therefore Timothy needed to be reminded to 1Ti 4:16, ”Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” and the benefits, 2Pe 1:8, ”For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
