The Motive Of The Seeker

Luke 10:25-37, 25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

A certain lawyer, one well versed in Jewish laws, a theologian, a scribe, and possibly a rabbi tempted Jesus. He probably noted that Jesus was calling sinners to repentance, but he fancied that he belonged to another class, as if to ask, “what is my way as a Jew for salvation?

Jesus being patient responded with a question asking him to state his own understanding of the law.  “And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself” (Luk 10:27 (ESV)). And Jesus said, “This do and thou shalt live”. This would have been a perfect place for him to acknowledge that no one has ever loved God with a perfect heart, or his neighbor for that matter. “But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (Luk 10:29). Evidently, he did not keep the law of love and was not looking to do it. He needed someone to concur with his position.

This leads me to ponder on this. In our time, the majority are also asking questions, but are they genuine questions? Are they seeking to change or just seeking endorsement? The motive of the seeker is key. He who comes to Christ with legit questions will see change. For he who fulfills the great law of love is born again but only in Christ, who is perfect in all His ways.
